Genie’s Magic is the Heart of Aladdin -Review

Disney’s another spectacular production, Aladdin is simply brilliant. Running with packed houses at Prince Edward Theatre, the show has genuinely created an excitement amongst the theatre goers. From the past two decades, the original movie is playing for innumerable times and certainly loved by multiple generations. With outstanding sets and great ensemble, Casey Nicholaw’s magnificent production has undoubtedly managed to create a stir.

The breathtaking opening of the show promises the audience to get set for another remarkable and enjoyable next few hours. The previous production of Disney, The Lion King has been a huge Westend success with expansion from the original movie by incorporating various other elements and culture of wildlife of Africa. Similarly, the show Aladdin has several expansions from the original movie version.

Dean John-Wilson and Jade McEwan, the two leads have given good vocal performance. The flying carpet in the duet song ‘A Whole New World’ simple upstages and mesmerizes the viewers. But, the real part goes to the role of Genie, which is really unnerving for any actor. The legendary vocals by Robin Williams for Genie have immortalised both of them. It is tough to visualise Genie without Williams.

But, Trevor Dion Nelson has done a remarkable job as a Genie, as he is quite successful in making this particular character his own. He is simply remarkable since the opening of the show and ‘Friend Like Me’ is simply hummable. Other highlights of the show are Aladdin’s friends Babkak, Omar and Kassim and their one-liners. However, the new song, ‘Proud of Your Boy’ does not match in this wonderful show.
