On 27th November 1806, the magnificent
theatre marked its opening as The Sans Pareil. Merchant John Scott founded the
theatre with his daughter Jane. She was a multi talented personality and acted
as the British theatre manager, performer, and playwright. The theatre was
renamed as Adelphi in the year1819. The theatre underwent replacement with an
up to date building in the year 1858 and known as New Adelphi followed by Royal
Adelphi in the year 1867.
The early years of Adelphi
theatre witnessed some of the finest melodramas popularly called as Adelphi
Screamers. In the year 1844, Madame Celeste and comedian Benjamin Webster owned
theatre. The theatre building underwent huge refurbishment in the year 1879
then in 1887. On 3rd
December 1930, the current Adelphi marked its opening and was redesigned
by Ernest Schaufelberg in Art Deco style.
The theatre was named as Royal
Adelphi Theatre and made its reopening with the musical Evergreen. Some other
popular shows performed at Adelphi were Words and Music, operetta Balalaika,
Bless The Bride, Maggie May and A Little Night Music. The Really Useful Group
