The story is set during the attack on Pearl Harbour and is loosely based on the wartime experiences of Jones.

The plot of From Here to Eternity revolves around the military officers who are involved in several romantic affairs. Due to some its homo sexual passages, the book was hugely censored. In the year 1953, movie with the same name was also released starring Burt Lancaster, Mongomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed and Frank Sinatra.

The book was the first publication of James Jones and he went on winning prestigious National Book Award for fiction.
